The study was conducted by Dr. John C. Cushman, a professor of medicine at the University of New Mexico, and his colleagues. They examined data from 28,000 postmenopausal women aged 18 to 44 years. Each woman had to take Celebrex for five years, and then another drug that was known as celecoxib was used at the same time. The data was analyzed by using Cox proportional hazards regression. Celebrex had the highest risk of breast cancer in women aged 18 to 44 years (1.07/10,000 person-years).
Cushman and his team examined the risk of breast cancer in postmenopausal women and found that the drug had an increased risk for women taking drugs that are similar to the ones used to treat osteoarthritis, a condition that causes pain and stiffness.
The researchers also looked at the drug’s interaction with other drugs. They found that there was a possible increase in the risk of breast cancer for women taking drugs that are taken for osteoarthritis.
“This is an important finding because it may lead to further research on the connection between the two drugs and breast cancer,” Cushman said.
In a statement, Cushman said, “This study has important implications for our understanding of the relationship between the drugs that are used to treat osteoarthritis and the risk of developing breast cancer.”
